We have been awarded an exciting new program across 2 of our regions, focused on providing person centred support for accompanied children and young people who are experiencing the impact of domestic and family violence and are living in our refuges with their mothers.

We are looking for experienced children and young people specialist workers who can support us to develop and deliver this new program which aims to:

  • Identify children and young people in our refuges who require specialist children’s support
  • Provide direct services to children and young people that are person centred, family centred and culturally appropriate
  • Support children and young people to access mainstream and specialist services

DVSM provides support services in an urban context (Inner Sydney), in a suburban context (Western Sydney) and in remote rural NSW (Wilcannia).

Purpose of Position

The program aims to break the cycle of disadvantage and improve client outcomes for children and young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and who have been impacted by domestic and family violence.

This role is positioned SCHADS Award Level 5.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assessing clients’ needs, developing a case plan and providing case management
  • Providing specialist services such as mental health support and counselling
  • Referring and supporting clients to engage with other services, including those that may provide long term and step-down support after the family leaves the refuge
  • Ensuring that children, young people and families are connected with education/training, community, culture, family and country
  • Facilitating one-to-one and group sessions within a refuge setting children and parents to provide support to children, discuss their needs and address their concerns
  • Providing advocacy assistance to children and parents and to act as the linker between the child and other support services
  • Providing specialist practice guidance to build staff capacity
  • Collaborating with the local service system to ensure wrap around services are available to families
  • Work in alignment with DVSM values and principles
  • Undertake other duties within the scope of this role, as reasonably directed

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum five years' work experience working with children within the community services sector and minimum Diploma in Community Services Sector or similar
  • Demonstrated understanding of the impacts of domestic and family violence has on children and young people
  • Demonstrated ability to use response-based practice case management approach
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with children and young people
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail, efficiency and ownership
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directing, plan and prioritise workload and show initiative.
  • Excellent verbal communications and interpersonal skills including competence to manage sensitive matters and materials
  • Sound written communication skills, including knowledge of best practice in writing case notes.
  • Computer literacy skills to at least an intermediate level
  • A confident, proactive ‘can-do’ attitude with willingness to multitask and self-manage competing priorities with proactive communication and flexibility to support the team
  • Demonstrated ability to effect and maintain a positive workplace culture and environment

Current Driver’s Licence is a requirement.

A successful Working with Children Check (WWCC) and Federal Police check is required to be employed with DVSM.

Desirable Criteria

  • Ability to establish and maintain meaningful partnerships with relevant service providers and stakeholders
  • Understanding of the policy framework that supports the domestic and family violence and homelessness sectors
  • Proven experience and expertise in working with children and young people within mental health
  • Proven experience and expertise in working with children and young people within a refuge setting
